Elder Regional Conference 2010
Nov. 9 organizational meeting
4 to 5:30 p.m.
The Center
Next October (2010) The Center plans to host its first regional conference on LGBT Aging, with a specific emphasis on civic engagement for the next generation.
This will be a wonderful opportunity to bring together many members of our community, service providers and experts in the field to consider what makes growing older as an LGBT person both rewarding and challenging. To accomplish this conference, we need many volunteers (of all ages)! to help on a variety of planning committees - program, venue, publicity, entertainment, fundraising, etc.
If you would like to get involved and be part of preparing this great event, join us for light refreshments and a kick-off organizational meeting at The Center on Monday, Nov. 9 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
Telling Your Story Project
Mondays, beginning Nov. 2
1:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Do you have experiences and memories you’d like to explore, and maybe share with others? Everyone has a valuable story, and we would like to help you tell yours! Whether you’re a writer, a talker, or not so sure, we can help you find the medium that works best for you in exploring your past, present, and future. Join The Center’s MSW intern, Jackie, an experienced memoirist and oral history teller, who will guide us through the fun, satisfying, and often therapeutic process of remembering the people, places, and events that come together to create our unique personal story. We will meet each Monday from 1:30-3:30 in The Center’s library, and we’ll use a variety of creative storytelling techniques and prompts. How the story gets out or even who hears it is not what’s important; rather, it is the pure joy of recalling, savoring, and appreciating the path that brought you to today. Regular attendance and sharing are encouraged but not required; do whatever makes you comfortable! If you have any questions, you may call Jackie Foglio on Mondays and Tuesdays, at 303-733-7743, or email her at elderprograms@glbtcolorado.org.
Breakfast and Opera - Live Performance of Puccini’s Turandot
Nov. 7 (Saturday)
9 a.m.
If you like (or LOVE) opera, you’ll really enjoy watching live performances of New York’s Metropolitan Opera telecast in high definition at one of our local movie theaters. Join us on Saturday, November 7th, for breakfast at downtown Denver’s Delectable Egg (9:00 AM, 1625 Court Place), and then walk across the street to the Pavilion Theaters to enjoy Turandot , by Puccini. Director Franco Zeffirelli’s breathtaking production of Puccini’s last opera is a favorite of the Met repertoire. Maria Guleghina plays the ruthless Chinese princess of the title, whose hatred of men is so strong that she has all suitors who can’t solve her riddles beheaded. Marcello Giordani sings Calàf, the unknown prince who eventually wins her love and whose solos include the famous “Nessun dorma.”
We will need an accurate RSVP count to reserve breakfast space and to purchase the theater tickets. Please let Ken know that you plan to attend, and send a check payable to “The Center” ($20.00 for seniors 60+, and $22.00 for regular admission) no later than Oct. 31st, a week prior to the performance, by calling him at 303.733-7743, ext. 122, or email to khelander@glbtcolorado.org . The Delectable Egg has an extensive breakfast menu and reasonable prices. Seating is first-come first-served, so we’ll try to get there when the doors open. The performance starts at 11 a.m.

1:30 – 3 p.m.
The Center - Library
Providing support and care for a loved one who is ill or otherwise dependent can be a very challenging task, especially over the long haul. Whether it is a partner, a friend, or a parent, in order to be effective as a caregiver, it is essential to take care of oneself along the way. A very helpful way to do that is to find others who understand the caregiver’s role, and who can offer emotional and practical solutions, as well as help identify other resources from our community. This support group is open to LGBT caregivers of any age, does not require a membership commitment, and is here as often as you need it. Feel free to call Ken if you’d like additional information.
